Logan’s sewer system development was much slower than that of neighbouring Brisbane or Ipswich.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Logan was a rural area with limited development on either side of the Pacific Motorway.

National Sewerage Program

n 1972, the Australian Government introduced the National Sewerage Program, which provided funding for the expansion of municipal sewerage systems across the country. The aim was to improve sewerage treatment facilities to better protect the ocean and rivers.

Under this Program, the federal government contributed more than $12 million to numerous southeast Queensland shires, including areas of Albert and Beaudesert which today are part of Logan City.

Logan’s New Council

Logan City Council was established in 1979. Up until then, different areas of the region fell under the auspices of Brisbane, Albert and Beaudesert councils.

The first budget of the new Council allocated nearly $5 million to water and wastewater (sewerage).

Development took off in Logan in the 1980s and 1990s, as there were less stringent infrastructure requirements than in Brisbane. Houses were cheaper and were as likely to have a septic system as be connected to mains sewerage infrastructure.

When is Sewer Repair Needed?

Rural parts of Logan still rely on septic systems, however the more highly populated areas – like Beenleigh, Browns Plains, Daisy Hill, Kingston, Loganholme, Slacks Creek, Springwood, and Underwood – are connected to sewerage.

While the sewer pipes in Logan may not be as old as those in neighbouring Brisbane, there is still a need for sewer repair. Sewer pipes are affected by things like cold weather, earth movement and tree roots as well as age. Once they cracked or broke, it usually meant a lot of mess and expense to excavate, remove and replace the damaged pipe.

Technology has come a long way since then. These days, sewer repair can be done without digging thanks to the Nuflow patented method, which involves creating a new pipe within the old one from advanced composite resins. But how did we get here?

Modern Methods of Sewer Repair

Started in Canada in 1988, Nuflow introduced the ‘sleeve within a sleeve’ pipe relining method of repair to Australia in 2004; in 2005 a patent was granted for a process that enabled lining around multiple bends.

Pipe relining is ideal for stormwater drain and sewer repair for several reasons:

  • It’s fast and can be done within a day
  • There’s no mess or excavation
  • It makes the pipe even better than new!

Contact us today on (07) 3277 8401 for sewer repair in Logan without the mess and expense!

A drain expert can also fix blocked drains fast, provide permanent pipe repair solutions for all drains and offer no-dig pipe relining services without having to dig or excavate.

Pipe relining vs replacement – which one is better?

Pipe relining seems like the clear winner, when you realise that it means being able to avoid the expense and excavation necessary to replace pipes.

However, pipe relining is so much more than just repairing or rehabilitating pipes without digging, it is a way of rejuvenating old, worn and damaged pipes that brings a range of benefits.

THE BENEFITS OF PIPE RELINING VS REPLACEMENT

As your local drain expert and plumbing specialists in the Logan area, we are well versed in the benefits of pipe relining vs replacement, which include:

  • No digging, excavation, destruction or disruption – avoid damage to your property with minimal disruption during the installation.
  • Environmentally safe – environmentally-friendly pipe repair technology that gives significantly fewer negative environmental impacts.
  • Reliable and durable – relined pipes have a longer lifespan.
  • Increase pipe effectiveness and fluid flow rate – pipe relining creates a smooth surface in the inside of your pipes which increases the flow capacity and reduces obstructions.
  • Helping to prevent blocked drains.
  • Most pipe repairs can be completed in one day – one of the biggest benefits of pipe relining vs replacement is that the relining process takes a fraction of the time of traditional piping methods.
  • 50-year guarantee on standard residential relining – we use quality products that last.
  • Fix leaks and prevent tree root intrusion.
  • Prevent lead and other contaminates leaching from the pipe into the water.
  • The relined pipe has greater strength than a new pipe, according to independent tests.
  • Providing a structural repair – even to sections where there is no existing pipe.

Ultimately the benefits of pipe relining can be summed up with this: peace of mind, knowing that your pipes have been rehabilitated with an effective and reliable solution with minimal disruption to your home and garden.

If blocked drains or broken pipes are a persistent problem occurring in your house, either from small persistent leaks to burst pipes, then pipe relining is recommended to repair and extend the life of your pipes.

If you’ve lived in your home for long enough, you will eventually encounter a blocked pipe or drain.

Whether it’s a backyard sewer, or a sink in the kitchen or the bathroom, there’s often more than just water disappearing down that plug hole!

There are many types of blockages, there are just as many remedies to try: from the good old plunger, to bicarb soda and vinegar, and of course the standard supermarket bought crystals.

Of course, sometimes none of those options are enough and you will need the services of a drainage specialist to get you unblocked! Before you get that far however, it is worth thinking about the reason why your drain may be blocked, because this could be the key to figuring out the best solution.

Blocked Drains in the Kitchen

The kitchen sink is one of the hardest working spots in your Logan property. All manner of bits and pieces, sauces and oils, end up being washed away down that drain.

And just like in our arteries, often the main culprits of blockages are oil and fat.

One of the best ways to help unblock and clean out kitchen drains is to use bi-carb soda, vinegar and boiling water. It’s a very simple but effective technique. Use it as follows:

  • Pour one cup of bicarb of soda down the drain, followed by one cup of white vinegar.
  • Cover the drain hole opening.
  • Wait 15 minutes to allow the vinegar and bicarb soda to unclog your drain.
  • Then, remove the drain cover and run hot tap water down the pipe to clear the blockage.

The simple science behind it is that the combination of ingredients will help to dissolve and melt the fat and clear the drain. You may have to repeat these steps a couple of times.

Blocked Drains in the Bathroom

Sometimes blocked drains in the bathroom may be due to a build up of soap and shampoo. In this case, the above remedy for the kitchen sink may work.

However, it is more common to find your bathroom sinks and drains blocked with hair – and hair doesn’t dissolve with a bit of bi-carb and vinegar.

If hair is causing the blockage, it’s time to pull out the big guns! You’ll need proper chemicals as they will have to literally burn through the hair to unclog the drain.

This is when those store bought drain products may actually be worth it. The crystals contain an acid that will destroy the hair in your drain. Be aware, the smell is intense but at least you know it’s working! You could mix up a diluted solution of Hydrochloric Acid yourself, but be careful, if your acid is too strong, it can cause damage to your pipes and drains (and it’s not good for you to breathe it either).

Expert Help for Blocked Drains Logan

If you have tried the home solutions but to no avail, then it’s time to get a drainage specialist on the job. The team at Nuflow Logan are licensed plumbers, equipped with drain snakes and cameras – non-invasive, low cost methods they can use to determine what is blocking your pipes and where.

The last thing you want in storm season, is to find out the hard way that you have blocked stormwater drains – so here are our tips to help prevent flooding and other issues.

In south-east Queensland, our storm season traditionally runs from November through to April.

Add to that a La Nina weather pattern, and you know we’ll be in for a LOT of rain – like on 28 February 2022 when nearly 200ml fell in Logan City, in just 24 hours!

Have you ever stopped to wonder though – just where does all that water go?!

Where Does all the Water Go?!

Obviously, some of the rainfall soaks into the ground.

However in a more urban environment like Logan City, a lot of it ends up on roadways and roofing. Roof water flows into your gutters and pipes before connecting up with the underground stormwater system; while water on the road gushes into stormwater drains. Eventually the stormwater drains discharge into nearby creeks or the sea.

As the water surges into the stormwater drains, it collects anything in its path – such as plastic bags, toys and other rubbish, as well as garden waste like leaves, sticks, gravel, soil and mulch. Once the water subsides, the debris is often trapped in the pipes, causing a blockage.

And the first you’ll realise that you have blocked stormwater drains, is when you experience flooding in the next heavy downpour.

Not all blockages are caused by debris however; invasive tree roots are another common culprit.

How to Prevent Blocked Stormwater Drains

The time to prepare is before the first storm of the season unleashes its fury.

It’s worth checking a couple of key areas on your property regularly:

  • Gutters and downpipes – remove the leaf litter and debris from the gutters and downpipes, or you risk water backing up and overflowing inside your house – and the last thing you want in the height of a storm is to have to go outside and clear them out!
  • Stormwater drains – if you do have a stormwater grate in your yard, make sure that it is protected from potential landslides of bark chip, gravel or mulch from your garden, in a heavy downpour.

Who is Responsible for Blocked Stormwater Drains?

In Queensland it is the property owner’s responsibility to maintain and repair gutters and any stormwater drainage systems that are located on their property.

Where residential properties connect into a large underground stormwater pipe which runs through other private properties downstream, these properties can have private easements over the pipe and sometimes the overland flow above, without involving the local Council. In these cases, a blockage or maintenance could also be the responsibility of the property owners.

For stormwater drains that are not on private property, we recommend getting in touch with your local Council if you notice any blockages, flooding or other issues.

At Nuflow Logan we are the drainage specialists, working across all suburbs of Logan, including:

  • Daisy Hill, Springwood and Browns Plains in the north;
  • Eagleby, Beenleigh and Logan Village in the east;
  • south to Jimboomba and Mundoolan;
  • Greenbank, New Beith and Flagstone in the west.

When it comes to blocked stormwater drains, we can assist by:

  • Inspecting underground pipes and drains using a CCTV camera, to locate any obstructions or damage.
  • Flushing out drains with our high pressure jet rodding system to dislodge debris.
  • Removing invasive tree roots.
  • Relining the broken or damaged pipe with the Nuflow “no dig” drain repair method.

Contact us today on 07 3277 8401 for help with clearing or fixing your stormwater drains.

Should you have a go at unblocking drains yourself, or is it something that is best left in the hands of a professional?

While in some cases blocked drains occur simply due to a build-up of drain sludge, often it’s an indication of a bigger underlying issue.

Here are some tips to help you determine what to do next if you suspect you have a blocked drain.

SIGNS OF A BLOCKED DRAIN

Chances are you’ve already noticed one or more of the following signs of a blocked drain:

  • Water draining slowly from the shower, bath or sink.
  • Toilet water levels rising.
  • Gurgling noises.
  • Unusual smells.
  • Overflowing drains (this one usually requires urgent attention!)

DIY STRATEGIES FOR UNBLOCKING DRAINS

If your blocked drain is in the kitchen, bathroom, or laundry, you could try the following:

  • Use a plunger to help shift build-ups of drain sludge.
  • Pour boiling water, or a commercial cleaning product down the drain.
  • Mix 1 cup of vinegar with ½ cup of bicarb soda and leave in drain overnight.
  • Unscrew the u-bend of the sink to see if a blockage can be removed from there.

if these attempts are not successful, it’s likely the issue is beyond your standard build-up of food, grease, hair, or lint. Time to call in a drainage specialist! Not only would it be time-consuming to continue investigating yourself; you could do further damage.

THE LONG TERM SOLUTION FOR UNBLOCKING DRAINS

An inspection by a plumbing professional specialising in repairing blocked or damaged pipes and drains – such as Nuflow Logan – is your next step.

The best part? Nuflow’s patented “no dig” technology, which utilises high definition CCTV cameras and existing plumbing access points to identify the problem – and then fix it – all without disrupting or damaging your home or business. Phew!

In some cases, the use of a drain snake or ‘eel,’ or a high pressure water jet may be enough to clear the blockage.

However, if invasive tree roots or cracked or deteriorating pipes are detected – pipe relining is often the best solution to prevent the problem from recurring down the track.

Our Nuflow team can seal and repair damaged pipes by inserting a liner which adheres to the original pipework, making it stronger than new – all backed by a 10 year installation warranty and up to a 50 year manufacturers product warranty!

When it comes to unblocking drains, we are the experts in Logan, offering long-term solutions through innovative technology and techniques. Contact us today for help with your blocked drains on (07) 3277 8401.
